To celebrate the week of St Patrick’s Day, Surry Hills’ whiskey haunt The Wild Rover, in conjunction with The Whiskey Co-Operative, will host the inaugural Irish Whiskey Fair on Monday 13 March.
The Australian based Irish whiskey community will gather at The Wild Rover to showcase their booze and provide an opportunity for consumers and hospitality trade to taste their way through brands featured on the shelves of bars and bottle shops across the country.
Suppliers are contributing their booze for the afternoon and evening to raise funds for ‘Darkness Into Light’, the annual walk at dawn held across nine countries in aid of Pieta House, an Irish suicide prevention charity originating in Dublin. Last year, Bondi Beach saw sixteen hundred participants walk the 5km circuit on the picture perfect morning of Saturday 9 May to create positive conversation and highlight the issue of suicide and mental health.
In 2015, suicide accounted for one-third of deaths (33.9 percent) among people 15-24 years of age making it the leading cause of fatality among the age group in Australia. All profit from the Sydney walk and Irish Whiskey Fair will be donated on behalf of The Wild Rover to Darkness into Light to assist in keeping the bringing the conversation to light about the epidemic that affects so many people across the world.
The Wild Rover opened in 2013 as a welcoming local neighbourhood bar with an Irish twist located in the Sydney suburb of Surry Hills. Housed in an unassuming clothing house, the bar aims at bringing people together who share a love of good times, jovial antics and quality booze.
The Whiskey Co-Operative was established in early 2014 following an influx of regulars to ‘The Rover’ wanting to learn more about the spirit well stocked on the shelves behind the bar. The ‘Co-Op’ welcomes everyone from beginners wanting to learn to love the dram to passionate whisky buffs. Everyone (of legal age) is welcome to join. The club has grown to over four hundred members with tastings and events throughout the year showcasing whisk(e)y from both Ireland and across the globe. New website and social channels will be launched in February 2017.
Tickets include ten tasting tokens, some food during the session and your own Irish Whiskey Fair tasting glass.
